The topic of God being real seems like a no brainer for Christians. If we can except that He is real, why do we not trust in Him? If He is real, why do we doubt His ability to provide in our lives? The short answer would be that we don't trust Him. The reason we don't trust Him is because we believe He is able, or fear overpowers our emotions.
Most children are afraid of Monsters because they believe that they are real, waiting to bite their toes under the bed. Most small kids need reassurance that monsters are not real, repeatedly. This stems from fear of the unknown. They have no certain fact in their mindsets that monsters are not real; therefore, by default the uncertain fact of the possibility of monsters is why they are afraid. Apply this same concept to something that is real. God, Heaven, the Spiritual world. Most atheist have a hard time believing that God is real, due to the possibility that they have no certain fact in their mindset to say otherwise. In Lamens terms, they haven't experienced Him for themselves, and no one is there to reassure them of His existence.
That is why it is most important that we know why we believe in God as real. Is it because of tradition passed down, constant reassurance? Is it because we have seen the mighty work of God's transformation in our lives or someone we know? Is it because we have searched and found the answers to our questions and God has revealed Himself to us? The Bible tells us that we do not " find " God. John 6:37:
"All that the father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out."
We do have the responsibility to seek the Lord, but in order to have a desire the Lord He has to place the burning desire into our hearts. Revelation 22:17:
"The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come.' And let the one who hears say, 'Come.' And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price".
We have a desire to seek the Lord and follow through with our actions. It is a sad fact that most Christians stop at realizing that God is real. The contentment of salvation is enough and never follow through with action. The actions of seeking Him is on us, out of love to look for His existence in His Word, in our daily lives, and even in others. What I mean by this is that once we comprehend that He is real in our mindset and He reveals Himself to us in a way that the doubt of His reality is put to shame, then it is our love for His existence that will make us want to seek Him. When we read God's word, the Holy Spirit guides us to knew understandings to tell us who God is. God is good, His nature is pure and righteous. Many times, in our daily lives God is showing us His glory. Not in the idea of Moses, where He comes in forms of a cloud or a burning bush, but in all things that are in our lives. We would have nothing, be able to do nothing without God. He gives us blessings throughout the day, but a lot of times we neglect the perception to see His works. John 15:4-5. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
We can also find God in others. I do not mean that in any way is anyone equal or capable of containing God's entity within themselves. Mature Christians can show us an example of who God is by the conduct that they portray, as we walk closer with God, the goal is to become more Christ like. This is achieved by losing love for self and the things the world can offer, focusing the mindset on eternity. Corinthians 5:20 states, "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us," Mature Christians are still people. They make mistakes. Some people will deny Christ because of how a church member treated them. Blaming God for their actions but deny the goodness of God in a Christian who is walking closely with God. God is perfect, and we are not, but we are able to show God's nature when we walk close with Him and His glory can radiate through us. Matthew 5:16 "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
After understanding of God is real. We need to understand His power. He is in full control of all, and we must willingly surrender to Him. This is must easier to say than to do. This comes from experiencing God, but we must loose and endure pain in order to be willing to surrender. God doesn't want to hurt us or cause us pain. In fact, He wants us to live a happy life and enjoy it. John 10:10. "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly," The hard lesson to learn but one worth going through. To surrender is not something that could be wrote about and learned through knowledge. In surrendering we must lose our self-love. A.W Tozer explains self-love like this " It is woven of the fine threads of the self-life, the "hyphened" sins of the human spirit. They are not something we do; they are something we are and therein lies both subtlety and their power."(The Pursuit of God) This would be things like pride, confidence, ability, knowledge, and so much more. The things that we are proud of about ourselves, that feeling of self- gratification should be the gratification in the Lord.
Knowing God is real and surrendering to Him is the start to a relationship with Him. A relationship is personal between the created and the creator. This is not to be mistaken with tradition. Let's address what does not make a relationship, going to church, attending Christian events, helping others, being a good person, or obtaining head knowledge about Christianity. This is where sadly 90% of the Christian population fall off the wagon, or at least it seems like. The heart must be changed in order to have a relationship with God; He must dwell in you and be a part of your daily life. When your heart is changed to become more like Christ and we listen to God through our life with help of the Holy Spirit and obey Him, that is when we develop a relationship with Him. This could look different for every Christian, I am not to judge how your relationship with the Lord should look like, as long as it is true. The way to tell if it is true, is that God is never changing, all knowing, all powerful, outside the constrictions of time and is the same God that the Bible talks about. God will not be any different then how He is in the Bible, that is who we are to seek after. How we decided to spend time with the God of the Bible, is usually different for all of us. For example, I prefer to read the Bible early in the morning with my cup of coffee. My mom reads an electronic Bible on her work lunch break. God didn't change; our relationship is different, but both are sincere and personal to us individually. The way to know if your relationship with God needs work, is that it does. None of us are perfect. Jesus is perfect as shown in the Bible and He had His relationship with the Father until the end and then after He arose as well. God did have to forsake Him in order that we would never be forsaken, that if we came to believe in the Son we would be forgiven and saved. (Matthew 27:46) Just that truth should bring us to our knees in thankfulness and increasingly love for the Savior.
Red, Orange, blue, green, yellow, purple. Colors. We have no doubt if the sky is blue, or if grass is green. Think about a person who was born blind, let's name her Sarah. She has never seen a color. Does that make colors not exist? Sarah has people in her life that confirm that colors are real. She has books that educate her that colors are real. Just because she can't see the color doesn't mean it's not real. The rest of us who can see the truth know and that is why it is so important for us to share the truth with those who cannot see. Sarah isn't less for not seeing, she is viewing by faith. That is the same way we are to view God, by Faith. God isn't a mystery, but simple. God is good. God loves us. God sent His Son to die for our sins. We will never be forsaken. He comes to us with a desire to dwell in our hearts. He forgives us if we repent. God is in control. God knows what He is doing. God is never surprised. God exist outside of time. God is the Holy Spirit, the Son and Himself in one known as the Trinity. God is above all. God is and will always be. God is real.
